Top 14 Tweets of the Brazil v. Germany World Cup Game

It is impossible to ignore that the World Cup is happening right now. And Germany is winning.

News of the tournament is all over social media, I've covered where to watch in Berlin on EasyExpat and Where to Watch in Germany on about.com and every night there are fireworks announcing each goal. While our stamina is sadly sub-par to watching all the games, we've rallied around the US team (before their loss to Belgium) and worn our Germany colors proudly around town.

Last night's game between Brazil and Germany was a slaughter. Total annihilation. A complete, unbelievable joy to watch for Germany fans like us. Enjoyment was elevated even more when I tuned in to what people were saying on Twitter.

Falling in Love with the NFL in Europe

In the fall, a  notice briefly flashed across the UBahn monitor: “German Bowl XXXIV”. I knew immediately that we were going.

Where to take Your Texan Nephew in Berlin

Do you know what 18-year-olds like? I've got no idea. And I've got one coming to our house in Berlin tomorrow, straight off the plane from Texas.

My sister, Brandy, is almost exactly 10 years older than me. My elder nephew is 10 years younger. We're like those Russian nesting dolls. Brandy has trusted us to guide her first-born, Kyle, on his first trip to Europe before he enrolls in the Navy. This kind of trust - I simply don't know what to do with myself/him/etc. I am hoping my Berlin favs will stand up to test and we will have an amazing time. Press your thumbs for all of us....

To document how it all goes down, I am going to track our progress. I am expecting a lot of "okays" and mumbles in response from Kyle. That's how teens communicate, right?  We pick him up tomorrow.

Hertha v. Union - Berlin Football

We heard about this game before we even came back to Berlin. West Berlin's team, Hertha did poorly last season and was regulated to the 2nd league. On the east end of Berlin, the old iron worker's team Union did very well and was promoted to second league. For the first time ever- it would be

We went, we saw, it was epic. I will let the pics & videos speak for themselves.

Where to watch American Football in Berlin? SALAMAS!

If you have heard us talk about Berlin, you have heard about Salama & his bar. It was here, watching American football, that we made some of our best friends, spend countless Saturday/Sundays, and where Ian got his job as an English teacher (in a bar- ironic right?)

Making Friends

You never know how hard it is to make friends till you leave all of your own behind. Everyone here has their networks of friends from childhood, work, and social groups. You get friendly with some, but many slip by as acquaintances rather then someone you can laugh with. Luckily for me, Ian is a friend magnet and attracts all types! After a lot of hanging around the computer and staring at each other, we are finally creating a pretty good friend base here in Berlin.

Last weekend entailed a couple friendly enterprises- a house party, our first non-Washingtonian guests, the super bowl, and a somewhat unwelcome tag along. The house party was a success although the Israeli/German guests just weren't putting their full wrist action into beer pong. I guess some thing don't translate. A couple Ian works with joined us at the apartment before the Superbowl to talk about Germans, stamps, and you know- stuff. From there we started out for our favorite sports bar- Salamas with a surprise guest. Ian can take it from here:

" The game started at 12:30 here, so we got on the tram around midnight with our friends to go to the bar. As we're waiting, this drunk guys comes right up to us and joins our circle. He spoke to us in English, and he even had somewhat of a British accent. Come to find out, he's some gay German guy, and he decides to tag alone with us for the night. Almost the entire first half he's sitting next to me, chatting my ear off. I just wanted to watch the game! Luckily he left pretty quick after half-time, but not before hitting on our friend. It made for quite the experience."

Ian means he hit on Justin, our new Canadian friend with his girlfriend Krisha & I trying to tell the German "No, you should not fondle his bum!" It was an event. May every weekend be that exciting...but maybe without the aggressive attempts at a pick-up. Maybe.

Football in Deutschland

Football, the kind played with your hands- not your feet. Elusive in Berlin, Ian was able to hunt down a game in Freidrichshain with a bunch of other fans. We made it just in time for the highly anticipated Patriots v. Colts game & the room was packed! A lot of American guys, a German or two, & a Swede all fell into speaking in English with all fo its colloquialisms & slang. We have resisted the temptation to hang out with English speakers till now, but the trade off was some leads on jobs, advice on how to go forward, and proof that other determined Americans landed in Berlin without much of a plan & have thrived. Thank you Toy Town, thanks fellow ex-pats, and most of all thank you football (although the Colts should have won).

German v. American

There are many subtleties to appreciate in the difference between Germans & Americans. Ian & I are going to watch a football game tonight & Ian posted to the group to ask about details. An interested German also had some questions. Guess which one is Ian:

So Salama's tonight eh? What is the going rate for beers there? Do they have any specials or anything? This dollar/Euro conversion is really kicking my ass.
